Ludwig hatte mich eingeladen.
Ludwig had invited me. And now he and I are in the Church of St. Hedwig's, long before the concert begins. We are experiencing a part of the boys’ warming-up and we can talk to the choir director Francis Stockwell and Craig Carmody-Anderson and organist Dr. Crystal Rossow. The latter is also the mother of one of the choir boys.
The Church of St. Hedwig is a modern building. A fascinating mural behind the altar conveying the illusion that the space around the length of the church is continuing there.

Above the altar hangs a cross or a sculpture of Christ. Very tasteful. On the back wall there is an organ loft under which the main entrance is situated.
The church very rapidly fills up half an hour before the concert begins, so that at the end the medium-sized church is filled to about three quarters.
Applause rises as the boys enter the church followed by the boys of the famous Stuttgart boys' choir Collegium Stuttgart Iuvenum. The latter are officially the host and sit down in the third row. The boys of the North Star Boys' Choir concert wear gray clothes, the creation of which we were able to see here in the thread.
Der North Star Boys' Choir beginnt mit
Adriano Banchieri, "O Hear the Joyful Music"
Die Jungen singen komplett auswendig und a capella. Glockenhelle und klare Stimmen füllen den Kirchenraum.
The North Star Boys' Choir begins with
Adriano Banchieri, "O Hear the Joyful Music"
The boys sing a capella and completely by heart. With the clarity of bells the voices fill the church.

Beim folgenden Lied ist Orgeleinsatz notwendig:
Johann Sebastian Bach, "Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emsigen Schritten"
The next song requires the usage of an organ:
Johann Sebastian Bach, "Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emsigen Schritten (We hasten with faint but eager steps)"
Georg Friedrich Händel, "How Beautiful are the Feet" aus dem "Messiah".
The usage of an organ is also necessary with a contemporary of Bach:
George Frideric Handel, "How Beautiful Are The Feet" from the "Messiah". When he wrote this work, Handel was already a British citizen.
Of quite a different nature, the traditional American hymn "Amazing Grace" And a capella it sounds best.
Stephen Adams, "The Holy City" is sung by the little blond Vincent VanHatten as a soloist, very powerful and simply wonderful.

Accompanied by the organ the boys then sing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Ave verum corpus," a very solemn song which depends on the finest nuances .
"Little David Play on your Harp" ist eine ganz andere Art der Musik, nämlich ein Spiritual.
"Little David Play on your Harp" is a completely different type of music, namely a Spiritual.
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"
After the older boys, white shirts and dark ties, have joined, another Spiritual follows:
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"
Allein von den Älteren gesungen folgt ein Lied aus Russland von Michail Ippolitov-Ivanov, "Bless the Lord O My Soul"
Solely sung by the older ones follows a song from Russia by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, "Bless the Lord O My Soul"
Then the entire choir disappears into a side room. The Stuttgart boys' choir Collegium Iuvenum now lines up in front of the altar for two songs.
Orlando di Lasso, "Jubilate Deo"
László Halmos, "Jubilate Deo
Also a very nice performance! But so different.

Crystal Rossow spielt als Intermezzo ein Orgelsolo.
As an intermezzo, Crystal Rossow plays organ solo.
The boys of the North Star Boys' Choir now come back, dressed like the barbers from the thirties of the last century. Somehow this looks sharp!
As usual with barbershop music, music also belong to certain movements.
Mac Davis, "I Believe in Music"
ist ihr erstes Lied dieseas Genres.
Mac Davis, "I Believe in Music"
is their first song of this genre.

Paul Simon, "59th Street Bridge Song"
The second song is not from that time period but sung in the same style:
Paul Simon, "59th Street Bridge Song"
What is this now? The boys turn their backs to the audience, taking off their vests ... while Francis Stockwell gives a few explanations. When he claps his hands once at the end, the boys turn around and now wear black vest instead of red ones. And the sleeve bands are gone. Also very chic.

Now comes a short German-language part from the southern areas. Also completely sung by heart! The first song of this kind is the Austrian folk song
Franz Schubert, "Wohin?" Eine tolle Leistung!
Alec Staricka, a wonderful soloist, actually sings alone the complete song by
Franz Schubert, "Wohin (Where?)" A great performance!

You have to regard the next song as something special, at least I felt that way.
An Austrian song from Styria:
" Die drei Pfeiferlbuam (The Three Piper Boys)"
Always three boys sing as a trio, and then get replaced by three others. According to the song title, several boys at a certain point play the recorder. How beautifully you still can use the often misunderstood recorder!

"Bring Him Home".
Now the genre changes to a different one: a few years ago, the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the musical "Les Miserables". The choir sings one of its songs:
"Bring Him Home." Trevor Hendrix is a wonderful soloist!

Unfortunately, it is now the last song:
"Niska Banja", a Serbian Gypsy dance.
As written in previous reports, the boys go straight to the audience, shaking hands, then stay at certain times in the audience in order to sing.
Really “a choir to touch”, a good example for other choirs!
Towards the end of the song, all the boys have to quickly go back to their places. One of the smallest and youngest rushes back to the front reaching his place as the last notes fade away. His success is a little laughter.
Jubelnder, nicht endend wollender Applaus! Danksagungen. Dann kommt der endgültige Schluss:
Der North Star Boys' Choir und Collegium Iuvenum singen ein Lied gemeinsam.
Thomas Tallis,“Glory to Thee My God this Night” from Thomas Tallis.
Jubilant, nearly unending applause! Acknowledgments. Then comes the finale:
The North Star Boys' Choir and Collegium Iuvenum sing a song together.
Thomas Tallis,“Glory to Thee My God this Night” from Thomas Tallis.

After the concert I briefly meet with the chorus, exchanging a few words with boys who recognize me from two years ago. And I share with all the boys how wonderful their concert was. Now I have won almost all the boys’ hearts. They are quite lovely sweet rascals, thanking me in a very friendly way.
Now I have to let go. The boys with host families for the night before they begin their long return flight the next day.
I'm glad to have at least experienced the last concert!
